Traveling makes the world so much smaller...proven yet again when we met our French friend, Julie, in Ancud! As we returned from touring the town of Ancud we stopped to talk 'dog' to the hostel pets. Who called from an upstairs window? Julie. She had news to share about her travels in Castro, our next stop.
Castro is famous for palafitos, house built out over the bay on very tall stilts. There is a large wooden church in this town as well, we haven't yet ventured inside.
It was only one hour by bus from Ancud south to Castro on the island of Chiloe. I had emailed one hostel from the travel book but as I looked through this place on a steep hillside, Keith chose to stay uphill and met another hostel owner. He really liked her right away so we moved right in. Hostel was 'warmly' recommended by the Lonely Planet we found out afterwards, and it is quiet and comfortable, though nothing fancy like our previous stay.
We strolled around town after arriving and met up with a couple from Spain. The gentleman was the obvious tour guide of the two so we followed his lead. We saw various palafitos and the cathedral before returning to the main plaza. There we listened to a 'church in the park' group of young people playing guitars and singing while a man with a hand-held microphone/speaker warned people to follow Jesus before it was too late. We both felt the young people had a better chance moving innocent bystanders to hear the message of love!
After purchasing bread, cheese and sausage (a Czech picnic a'la Victor). we returned home for the night.
We enjoyed breakfast with two young women from San Francisco before following them to the bus station for another day riding to nowhere in particular. Again beautiful countryside and small fishing villages helped us pass the day. Though we are a bit bored with the island life, at least it is spring and the temperature is warm, days are lengthening and we are enjoying the company of each other and strangers.
i'm happy it has been a small world for you as you travel...i love getting to see what you are journeying through...but mostly, i enjoy reading of your common 'run-ins' with your beloved travel community...
ReplyDeleteHey, Y'all! Looks and sounds like you're having a great time! I love the stories of random run-ins, too!
ReplyDeleteYou are really getting good at the photos, too!
Miss you here. Winter finally hit SF today. Headed to Atlanta for Turkey on Monday for 9 days of family fun ;-)
Looking forward to reading more posts. Busy every day looking for work and working with a new career coach. I'll find something, but so far, lots of looking for no response. I mean, really. How could anyone resist my charming, magnetic personality and obvious talents for the obscure?!?
Miss you both! Be safe and well!
